This original block print was inspired by my hikes in Sand Canyon in Canyons of the Ancients National Monument during my artist in residence.

It is a hand-pulled 4-color linocut print that captures the striking contrast of layered sandstone rising beneath the brilliant blue skies of the Southwest. I carved the key block while in residence and then carved the color blocks and printed when I returned home.

Titled Sand Canyon Sentinel, I was especially struck by the extreme shifts in sandstone color from top to bottom. In the Southwest, the skies are often an intense, unforgettable blue, and I wanted that contrast between earth and sky to be central to the print.

This print was created using 3 hand-carved blocks and printed in 4 colors, layering color and texture to bring out the bold forms of the desert landscape.

Each print is hand printed, signed, and part of a small edition and now available on my Etsy site.

Part of my contract with Canyons of the Ancients National Monument was to produce and donate an art quilt inspired by my time there.

I based my piece on a cultural site called Sunny Alcove that showcased a few ancient walls still standing under the enormous sandstone cliffs. The beautiful masonry of the structures of these Ancestral Puebloans has always impressed me. This makes the 19th quilt in my national park poster style series. We will be traveling back to that area in a week when I will deliver it.

I’m thrilled to share some exciting exhibition news with you!

My piece, Bates Cairn #2, has been accepted into the Visions Museum of Textile Art Quilt Visions 2026, the museum’s 27th international juried exhibition. It’s an honor to be included in a show of this caliber.

The exhibition jurors, Carolyn Ducey, Justin Ming Yong, and David van Buskirk selected work that represents art quilting at the highest level—highlighting innovation, excellence in composition, surface design, and craftsmanship. I’m deeply honored that my work was chosen among such outstanding pieces.

I really enjoyed piecing this abstracted design using my hand-dyed fabric! The show will be October 23, 2026, to January 16, 2027, in San Diego, CA.

A new pattern of Mount Rainier National Park is available for download.

Our RV trip in 2020 to Mount Rainier found us hiking in spectacular weather with wildflowers blooming in abundance. We saw so many big marmots! One of my photos is the inspiration for this pattern.
